Lessons Learned

Seven weeks is neither a long nor a short period of time. During this time, I gained significant learning and practical experiences regarding doctoral study preparation abroad, particularly at the University of Galway, Ireland. Here are some key takeaways from my participation in the 2024 Pre-Doctoral Course Program:

  1. Engaging in Direct Discussions with Potential Supervisors
I had the opportunity to directly discuss my research proposal with a potential supervisor, receiving valuable feedback and suggestions that were instrumental in improving the quality of my proposal.
  2. Practical Application of Academic English Skills
I was able to practice my academic English skills in real-life settings in Ireland, both in academic and non-academic contexts. This experience was crucial in boosting my confidence in using English for writing, reading, and speaking.
  3. Understanding Research Ethics and Integrity
I gained a deeper understanding of the importance of research ethics and integrity, particularly the need for ethical clearance or approval before data collection. This has emphasized the critical role of ethical standards in conducting research.
  4. Experience in Poster Presentations
I had the opportunity to create a research poster and present my research ideas clearly to visitors, responding to questions and engaging in discussions. This experience was valuable, as it was something I had not encountered before participating in the Pre-Doctoral Course Program at the University of Galway.
  5. Gaining Insight from Seminar Discussions
The seminars were highly beneficial, allowing me to listen to others’ perspectives before contributing my own. This experience will be useful in group discussions, where considering multiple viewpoints before speaking is essential for effective communication.
